Dunes Hotel and Country Club | Ash Tray, Playing Cards, and... Forks?

The Dunes originally opened May 23, 1955, as the 10th resort in the strip. The early days of its operation (as with many casinos in this time) were a struggle for The Dunes, changing ownership a number of times between 1955 and 1956 as each owner struggled to turn a profit. In 1956, Major Riddle, a mob-connected man who made a fortune in Texas Oil and Gas, purchased a controlling interest in the Dunes and would remain involved in the resort until his death in 1980.

Under Major Riddle, the resort found both stability and success. Introducing the first topless show in all of Vegas in 1957, one of the first convention centers in the city in 1959, a golf course in 1964, and a new hotel tower in 1965.

By the late 80s, reports that the resort had become outdated and "a dump" were common to hear. With new resorts such as The Mirage (1989) and Excalibur (1990) ushering in a new age and standard in the city, the writing was on the wall for what was once a legendary establishment. In 1992, Steve Wynn purchased the Dunes Hotel, Casino, and Country Club for $75 million. Wynn demolished the Dunes in 1993 to make way for the Bellagio, which opened in 1998.

Pictured above are two packs of sealed playing cards from the Casino, an Ash Tray, and two forks from the "Sultan's Table" dining room.

All items are proudly and permanently on display at the Degen Museum.
